Mold needs organic material to grow and it found it in between the tiles. Tiles are not organic and will not grow mold but over the years the sealing of the grout wears off allowing dirt and grime to settle inside the spacing.

Removing the grout and replacing it was the only surefire way to have the mold gone for good. The new grout was then sealed to keep the mold from growing once more.
